Diving
Krabi's
waters are great for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Popular sites include: Koh Poda, Koh Hong, Koh Yung,
Koh Phi Phi Ley, Hin Muang and Hin Dang Reefs, Koh
Rok and Koh Ngai. Many companies cater to divers
of every level and pocket book; most are located
at Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Phi Phi Don Island , and
Koh Lanta.
Sea
Canoeing
Enjoy the breath-taking beauty and uncanny peace
of a voyage among the mangroves, caves and limestone
massifs of Ao Tahlehn Bay and Koh Hong is in Krabi,
and Tahm Pee hua Toh (Big Headed Ghost) Cave in
Ao Luk District.
Rock
Climbing
Krabi's
Strange and beautiful limistone cliffs have become
popular rock and mountain climbing attractions for
adventurers from around the globe. The uninitiated
needn't be afraid, local companies are happy to
teach and climbs have been mapped out for every
level of expertise. The beaches of Rai Ley and Nam
Mao have many such companies.
Forest
Treks
Sights
you'll never forget are around the next bush in
Khao Nor Chuchi, which is criss-crossed by easy
trails; other interesting trails are found in Khao
Panom Benjah National Park
Bird-Watching
Bird-watching
is especially good from January till April in the
mangrove forests surrounding Kanab Nam Hill near
Krabi Town. Many rare birds are to be seen there
: gurneys, Finfoots, Big Winged Brown Kingfishers,
Egrets, Bittems, Herons and more.
Another
excellent bird-watching sight is Khao Nor Chuchi
Forest Preserve , com-monly khown as Tung Tiao,
in Klong Tom district, a low-land forest populated
by the nearly extinct and only recently re-discovered
black-breasted Pitta Gurhey.
Krabi
Dive Sites Information
Strangely
shaped limestone mountains and rock formations make
the provinces hinterland strikingly different from
the low-lying palm and rubber groves of the neighbouring
regions. Krabi's people too, are strikingly different
with the dominant religion of the region being Islam.
You'll notice that the men wear the white pillbox
hats and the women dark headscarves. In recent years
because of the growing tourism industry there has
been a substantial influx of northeastern Buddhist
workers as well as the increasing number of tourists
themselves making Krabi a fantastically cosmopolitan
destination.
With access to some of the best diving destinations
in the region, Krabi's popularity as a resort and
diving stop-over has increased in leaps and bounds
as a direct result of Phuket's ever-increasing overcrowding,
and is now rated as one of the best regions in southern
Thailand.
Ruggedly compact beach resorts such as Ao Nang
and Reilay offer the discerning diver and traveller
(as well as the diving backpacker) a variety of
modern day conveniences, accommodation, offshore
islands and adventure activities.
